October 7 National Day of Action to Support Public Education

October 7, 2010 has been designated by education activists as a national day of action to defend public education.  This day, the third such day since the September 24, 2009, will continue the struggle to raise awareness about the break down in quality of our public education system through chronic underfunding and failure to implement  effective reform. At the university level, we are experiencing a fundamental shift away from public funding coupled with an increased reliance on private sector funds and student debt.  California's students have reduced access to UC due to lower enrollments and increased percentages of out-of-state students.  

Within the UC system, campus based coalitions are planning activities for October 7th.  The links on the right side menu may help you find information about planning and events on your campus.

More information will be posted on this site as it becomes available over the next few weeks.

The grad student organizing committee at UCSC created this lesson plan to educate their students on the effect of privatization on students and faculty at UC.  This is easily adaptable for other UC campuses.  UC-AFT is asking all lecturers to use this lesson plan, or share points from it, with your classes during the week beginning on October 4th.
