Great Universities Need Great Librarians...Great Librarians Need Pay Parity!

Great universities need great librarians!  The contract that the UCOP negotiators are offering will not help UC recruit and retain great librarians:

UC Librarians make up to 27% LESS than their counterparts at CSU's and 19% less than CCC's. The university’s chief negotiator dismissed this, calling CSU and UC “apples and oranges.” UC is offering a  1% salary increase for the next two years. The Chancellors received a 3% raise last year alone. We have a major structural pay gap with competing institutions, and UC is refusing to even offer a reasonable cost of living adjustment.

UC Librarians need increased professional development support to cover additions to our collections responsibilites and other professional obligations. Our contract allocates approximately $750/year per librarian for professional development - well below other institutions. So far, UC has refused to adjust professional development support to reflect the actual cost of professional obligations.

The University pleads poverty when we discuss librarian salaries, but hiring and salaries for administrators who provide no direct services to students or faculty are rapidly increasing.

21st century scholarship is technical and evolving. Students and faculty need more and better services from professional librarians, while librarians are being asked to do more and more for less and less:

The consumer price index in the San Francisco area increased 3.1% in a single year (as of Aug. 2016) - an 8.9% increase compared to Aug. 2013.  Average rent in Berkeley is now $3800/month. ($45,600/year)
