Strike! UPTE and AFSCME to Hit the Picket Line on March 20: Guidance for UC-AFT Members

Our sister UC unions, UPTE and AFSCME, collectively representing close to 40,000 UC employees, have been out of contract for months as they fight UC on major issues like contracting out, over-time pay, retirement security and competitive and livable wages. Read this Op-Ed from Lucy Joseph, an UPTE V.P., on why UPTE is striking. AFSCME members are joining UPTE in a sympathy strike. Check here for picket line information for every campus.

UC-AFT members are encouraged to respect the picket line and join our colleagues on the line as much as possible during this one-day strike. Please review this strike guidance post from UC-AFT President, Mia McIver. Also, check out Mia’s public comment in support of fair contracts for all UC unions at the Regent’s meeting on March 13.

Lecturer Bargaining: 1000+ Survey Responses Received & Bargaining Dates Set
Well over 1000 members have submitted completed bargaining surveys and our survey team is beginning to analyze the responses. Over the coming weeks, our statewide Contract Campaign Committee will use the survey results to decide which articles to open for negotiations and to begin to prioritize bargaining objectives. Check the UC-AFT calendar for scheduled bargaining dates and locations through July.

Librarian Bargaining Heats Up
Last week, in response to UC’s lack of serious engagement at the bargaining table, librarians on every campus delivered letters to the UL’s articulating support for key demands and signed by a strong majority of librarian members. Check out bargaining update #16 on ucaftlibrarians.org for details on the last session at Berkeley on March 13.

UC-AFT Advocacy Day in Sacramento April 2
On April 1, UC-AFT leaders will enjoy a moment of recognition on the floor of the State Legislature. Jose Medina and Connie Leyva will introduce concurrent resolutions commending UC-AFT for our work in support of our members, high quality higher education, and UC’s mission. The next day, nearly twenty UC-AFT members will meet with legislators to share our issues and experiences and to lend support to AB 500 (Gonzalez) and SB 715 (Gagliani).

Council Executive Board Elections April 13: Candidate Statements Posted
Our annual election of statewide Council Executive Board officers will take place at our Council meeting in Berkeley on April 13. The nomination period for all offices is currently open and will remain open until the election. Candidate statements are posted to the UC-AFT website as they are received.
