California Federation of Teachers Online Voter Guide
Here’s an easy, online voter guide from CFT. Type in your address for a quick list of CFT’s statewide and local candidate endorsements and proposition recommendations.

Open Enrollment: Supplemental Long-term Disability, Legal Benefits & Home Care Providers

Open enrollment for health insurance and other available benefits began Oct 27 and closes November 22.

During this enrollment period, the UC will open up Long-Term Supplemental Disability insurance for the first time since the 1990s! If you sign up during open enrollment, no doctor’s visit is required; however, enrolling at other times requires a Statement of Health submission that may keep you from qualifying. Lecturers and Librarians are highly encouraged to review the information regarding this benefit. Check this page on UCNet for more detail. And, here's a premium calculator to estimate the cost.

Also, the ARAG Legal Plan will be open for the first time in several years. Costs for this plan range from $10-$15 per month, depending on the eligible family members covered. More information here. Finally, check out this database of home care service providers. All lecturers and librarians have access to this resource through UC’s benefits program.

Librarian Tentative Agreement Ratified
Our librarian bargaining team reached a tentative agreement with the University administration on October 17. 75% of eligible voters cast a ballot in the ratification vote last week, with 68% of voters in favor of ratification. The full Unit 17 (librarian) MOU will expire on September 30, 2018.

College Scholarships for Dependents of UC-AFT Members

Our parent unions, the American Federation of Teachers and the California Federation of Teachers both offer college scholarships to dependents of union members. The CFT Raoul Teilhet Scholarship ($1000, and $3000) deadline is January 10. The Union Plus Scholarship ($500-$4000) deadline is January 31. The AFT’s Robert G Porter Scholars Program ($8000, and $1000 grants) will have application information up in December. These benefits are available only to members of UC-AFT.  If you have not yet joined our union, please use the link below to become a member.

No DAPL: CFT Climate Justice Task Force & Local 1990 (UCLA) No DAPL Resolution

The UC-AFT Council unanimously endorsed the recent work of the CFT Climate Justice Task Force at our meeting on October 30 in Oakland. Members of UC-AFT’s Green Caucus are working with the CJTF to move a climate justice agenda forward within CFT. Check out our Green Caucus page for more info on UC-AFT’s work to fight climate change. Also, take a minute to read UCLA Local 1990’s resolution against the Dakota Access Pipeline and for good jobs in clean, alternative energy fields.

Issue Preview: Lecturers are Faculty…Period!

When we poll our members about the issues that matter most to them, respect and inclusion are always at the top of the list. Unfortunately, lecturers are often distinguished from “faculty” on website directories, e-mail lists, and in promotional materials and communications. Here’s an example from UCB’s School of Public Health that shows one way that lecturers are unnecessarily segregated. This is a widespread problem, however, it is a relatively easy fix for many departments. Check out the UCB School of Public Health directory…all faculty are listed together on one page (with only a few lecturers missing photographs)! Please help us improve lecturer representation and inclusion by sharing examples from departments that need improvement and from departments that do it well. At our Council meeting on January 28, we will collect examples from every campus and make plans to help departments improve their practices. Click here for more info on lecturer enfranchisement issues.
