Unit 18 Bargaining Update #12- Tentative Agreement Reached

Share

Colleagues:

At the end of our twenty-third day of bargaining face-to-face (and eight months of meetings in-between sessions), the bargaining team has reached a tentative agreement with the University for a new contract.

Our new contract makes several significant improvements in job security, wages, and due process.  We will send another message out sometime within the next week that tells you where to get details of the changes that have been agreed AND, for members, instructions on how to vote on ratification.

Click here for an article by article summary of the changes.

Here are some of the major changes:

  1. All lecturers will get a 3% raise effective October 1 except for people who have been denied merits recently or lecturers on a remediation plan. Another 3% raise will be discussed next year when we re-open the salary article.

   2.  Lecturers can only be laid off if the actual need for their courses goes away.

   3.  The UC has agreed to bargain with the union before it starts any online program that will affect our jobs.

   4.  There are very significant technical improvements made to many articles, which will make it much easier for the union           to resolve problems and process grievances more quickly.

   5.  The benefits article will be reopened if any changes are made to health or retirement benefits during the life of the                   contract.

   6.  While we did not get everything that we demanded, we were able to prevent many negative changes, while making the         contract much clearer and more consistent.  Further details will be made available shortly.

The Bargaining Team is making itself available to campuses that request a local meeting to explain the contract changes in advance of ratification, which will take place in the next two weeks.  Please watch your email and/or contact your staff member for details of any such meetings.

The Executive Board and the Bargaining Team strongly endorse the contract, and we hope that you will take the time to vote in favor of it.

Alan Karras, Chief Negotiator
