Dear President Michael V. Drake,
In light of the recent election and the upcoming transition to a new presidential administration, we,
University of California Union Coalition and UC Student Association, request to meet to discuss the
immediate and decisive action necessary to protect all members of the UC community. Given the
incoming administration’s stated plans to target immigrants, BIPOC communities, transgender
individuals, reproductive rights activists, Palestinian liberation activists, union members, and other
vulnerable groups, the need for a strong and enforceable sanctuary policy has never been more urgent.
Following the election, the University made a general statement regarding its commitment to
supporting and protecting all community members. However, statements alone are insufficient. By this
time in 2016, the UC System had already released its “Statement of Principles in Support of
Undocumented Members of the UC Community,” outlining specific commitments to refuse collaboration
with ICE and protect undocumented UC community members. We call on you to enhance and expand
upon these commitments in response to today’s escalating threats.
Please let us know your availability for a meeting with representatives from UCSA and the UC Union
Coalition as soon as possible. The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated.
Signed,
UC Student Association
