Legislative Work

Many of the issues UC-AFT works on are directly influenced by the political atmosphere in Sacramento.  The University of California has traditionally paid for its instructional mission with funding from the State, so according to UC our positions as lecturers and librarians are almost entirely funded by State dollars.

UC-AFT is also committed to maintaining and improving the quality of the educational experience for students at UC, so our interest in California state politics and budgetary deliberations extends beyond their influence on our salaries and job security.

UC-AFT has a Vice President of Legislation on our systemwide executive board.  This position is currently held by Axel Borg, who is a librarian at UC Davis.  Our legislative efforts include writing bills, lobbying for and against them, and tracking the progress of legislation.  We also endorse candidates in races that we feel the outcome will have a particular influence on UC issues.

Why We Support: Schools and Local Public Safety Protection Act of 2012

What is the Schools and Local Public Safety Protection Act?

The “Schools and Local Public Safety Protection Act” is a ballot initiative proposal that asks everyone, especially the richest Californians, to pay their fair share to help fund public education and vital public services.

A message from the Courage Campaign
Dear UC-AFT member,

If our new, progressive ballot initiative passes in November, California will have $9 billion in new revenue.

SB 114 Thank You-Sample Letter

Dear Senator Yee,

As a part-time faculty member I wanted to thank you for agreeing to carry Senate Bill 114 into this year's legislative session. While this bill is not meant to change the compensation of adjunct faculty it does allow a clear tranparent way for them to compare themselves to other academic faculty.

A Call to Action for November Elections

As we return from the summer and begin the next academic year we face a challenging future at the University of California. One way that we can influence the direction of the University is through political action. Your union, UCAFT, is working with our sister unions in the University;  AFSCME, UPTE, UAW and CNA, as well as our state-level affiliate, the California Federation of Teachers, to make sure our voice is heard and our stake in our future is understood.

CFT Announces Recommendations for November 2010 Elections

Why We Need to Support Marcy Winograd For US Congress

From UC to DC:  Solutions to the Faux Budget Crisis  by Marcy Winograd

Last year, when I spoke at the UCLA rally to protest tuition hikes, I noticed the blinds close
across Covell Commons, where the University of California's Board of Regents met in secrecy.
As students waved signs that read "Instruction, Not Construction" and "Free UC" and "UC Has Billions", the Regents unilaterally decided to hike student fees 32%, ostensibly to close an ever-widening budget gap exacerbated by the recession.

Senate Confirms Charlene Zettel by Narrow Margin

UC Regent designate Charlene Zettel was confirmed by the CA Senate on May 6 with the minimum number of votes possible for confirmation.  After 3 roll calls, Zettel finally received the essential 21 votes required.

Zettel was opposed by the UC Union Coalition due to her anti-worker voting record as a state assembly member in the early 2000's, and her refusal to commit to joint governance of UCRP.  The union coalition launched a last minute effort to convince democratic senators that as a Regent Zettel would not act in the interests of UC students or workers.

State Joint Legislative Audit Committee Approves Audit of UC

UC's Financial Black BoxWith other UC unions, the California Labor Federation, and UC-AFT , State Senator Leeland Yee requested that the Joint Legislative Audit Committee(JLAC) approve a comprehensive financial audit of the University of California.  This audit was unanimously approved by JLAC on  February 17.
