State Joint Legislative Audit Committee Approves Audit of UC

With other UC unions, the California Labor Federation, and UC-AFT , State Senator Leeland Yee requested that the Joint Legislative Audit Committee(JLAC) approve a comprehensive financial audit of the University of California.  This audit was unanimously approved by JLAC on  February 17.    To achieve budget transparency for the people of California, we believe it is critical that the Legislature examine UC's funding streams, distribution and use of resources, and systemwide compensation practices.  UC-AFT thanks Senator Yee for his work on this important issue, and we applaud JLAC for recognizing the importance of this step for the people of California and for the integrity of the UC system.  

UC-AFT President, Bob Samuels, worked closely with Sara Flocks of CalFed to draft the audit language.  Bob and Axel Borg,  UC-AFT's V.P. of Legislation, then worked with other UC unions to gather support for the final text of the audit request.  Axel was one of two people to speak during a brief public comment period.  During Axel's presentation he pointed to a UC Davis publication on indirect cost recovery for research funds where UC chose an image of a black box to represent the co-mingling of funding streams. It would appear that a UC document ultimately made the case for the audit.
