Ramp Up Bargaining Campaign…Member Workshops, Media and More…
While the pace of negotiations has slowed for the time being, librarians are using the break from the table to build our bargaining campaign and prepare for the next phase of negotiations. Each campus is holding campaign planning workshops in December and early January where members will plan concrete local steps for winning a great contract. Here’s more on these important workshops, including scheduled dates. Our negotiating team will meet for a full day on December 15th to work on proposals and gear up for bargaining dates scheduled through March. Meanwhile, our campaign continues to generate great media coverage with this interview on KALX and this article in AFT Voices.

Contract Negotiation Count Down…Non-Senate Faculty (NSF) Bargaining on the Horizon
Our current NSF contract expires January 31, 2020. Sounds far off, but the negotiation process begins months in advance of contract expiration. Per Article 40 Duration, the first significant date is February 1, 2019, when we’ll meet with UC administrators to discuss issues related to each article. Then, on April 1, 2019, each side will present a list of articles that we will open for negotiation…this is called the “sunshine” date. Finally, by April 15, both sides need to agree on a start date for negotiations.

NSF Contract Campaign Committee Elected—Bargaining Survey Coming Soon!
Most of the campus/locals have now elected five members to serve on our Contract Campaign Committee. The CCC will be the primary, statewide decision–making and advisory group tasked with planning our bargaining campaign and supporting our negotiating team. Please read this overview of the CCC to get a better understanding of the role of this important group and ways that you can support it. On December 12, the CCC will convene and begin work on a bargaining survey that our members will circulate early next year.

College Scholarships for Dependents of Union Members…Deadlines Approaching
One of the great benefits of union membership and our affiliation with CFT/AFT and the AFL-CIO is access to college scholarships for graduating seniors and continuing college students. The CFT Raoul Teilhet Scholarship ($1000, and $3000) deadline is January 10. The Union Plus Scholarship ($500-$4000) deadline is January 31. The AFT’s Robert G Porter Scholars Program ($8000, and $1000 grants) application window is December 1 through March 31. These benefits are available only to members of UC-AFT. If you have not yet joined our union, please use the link below to become a member.
