Please visit ucaft.org for a brief New Year’s message from UC-AFT President, Mia McIver.

Red for Ed—UTLA Strike and Support Actions…Oakland Heats Up
LAUSD teachers began an indefinite strike on Monday, January 14. UC-AFT supports UTLA members in their fight for smaller classes, higher pay, adequate staffing, charter school accountability and more. Read UTLA’s update here. If you are in the LA area, please adopt a school and join the teachers' picket line 7:00-9:00 am and 2:00-4:00 pm. You can also wear #RedforED throughout the strike to show solidarity with UTLA members. Looking north, the Oakland Education Association’s battle over school closures heated up with a big #RedforEd rally on Saturday, January 12 in downtown Oakland.

Librarian Bargaining Continues with Sessions at Davis and UCLA
Librarian bargaining will resume at UC Davis on January 15 and at UCLA on February 1. After nine months of bargaining, UC has provided no data in support of their low salary proposal, and they have failed to pass written proposals on a long list of articles. Our team notified UCOP negotiators in December that we expect them to present salary data and written proposals at the January 15 session. Check the librarian bargaining blog for the most recent updates.

Lecturer Negotiating Team Selected…Bargaining to Kickoff at UC Irvine January 30
Each campus has selected a negotiating team member from within their elected, five person Contract Campaign Committee (CCC). Our CCC and negotiating team will need a lot of member support throughout bargaining, starting with survey distribution in the coming weeks. Volunteer to be a UC-AFT liaison in your department and help us build a strong, member driven campaign.

Article 40 Duration of the Unit 18 MOU requires a one-day meeting in January when UC-AFT and UC will discuss issues related to each article of the MOU. This meeting will be the first official meeting of the negotiation process, though no proposals will be exchanged. UCI members are welcome and encouraged to attend and participate in the meeting. Details coming soon.
