Letter from UCOP Labor Relations Director Shelley Nielsen Regarding Unit 18 and the Furlough Program 

On October 21, 2009, UCOP Labor Relations Director Shelley Nielsen wrote to campus human resource directors to correct false information circulating at campuses in regard to Unit 18 and the furlough program. Read the letter here.

 

Chronology of UC-AFT's dealings with UCOP regarding the Furlough/Salary Reduction Program for Unit 18 Non-Senate Faculty

  1. July 17, 2009:  Letter from UCOP (Lynn Boland) to UC-AFT proposing that Unit 18 Non-Senate Faculty participate in the Furlough/Salary Reduction Plan approved by the Regents at their June 16, 2006 meeting.
  2. July 20, 2009:  UC-AFT representatives meet with UCOP representatives for an informal discussion of UCOP's Furlough/Reduction proposal; meeting ends with agreement that UC-AFT will submit an information request and that discussions will resume after the requested information is made available.
  3. July 23, 2009:  UC-AFT submits its information request regarding the Furlough/Salary Reduction Plan to UCOP.
  4. Late July through mid-August:  UC-AFT told informally by UCOP representatives that UCOP is having trouble figuring how to implement furloughs for Unit 18.
  5. August 21, 2009:  UC Provost Lawrence Pitts issues statement that furlough time cannot be taken during instructional time.
  6. August 31, 2009:  UC-AFT receives formal notice from UCOP (Peter Chester) that the University is withdrawing its proposal that Unit 18 Non-Senate Faculty participate in the Furlough/Salary Reduction Plan, and that UC instead will seek salary savings from this unit via the means already available under the existing contract.
