Statewide Executive Board Election Results
Our annual statewide executive board officer elections were conducted at the April 8 Council meeting in Oakland. The new board will begin their one-year terms on June 15. Congratulations to our new and continuing executive board members:

President- Mia McIver, Lecturer, UCLA (Former V.P. for Organizing)
Vice President for Legislation- Axel Borg, Librarian, UCD
Vice President for Organizing- Roxi Power, Lecturer, UCSC (New officer)
Vice President for Grievances- Ben Harder, Lecturer, UCR
Secretary Treasurer- Miki Goral, Librarian, UCLA

CFT Organizing Awards—Top Honors for UC-AFT in Membership Growth
Each year at the California Federation of Teachers Convention, CFT recognizes the accomplishments of their locals in organizing and communications. This year, UC-AFT received top honors in membership growth for all CFT locals! We were also recognized for adding a new group of UC employees to UC-AFT. Teachers, librarians and counselors at the Preuss School at UCSD will soon join UC-AFT and negotiate their first contract.

UCSC Proposes Workload Increase—UC-AFT Pushes Back
The Writing Program at UCSC has been asked by the Academic Senate to contemplate a number of curricular changes that would dramatically impact both the quality of instruction and the workload and compensation of lecturers in the program. Program administrators were informed over spring break and given only a couple of weeks to respond, and WP lecturers were given even less time: just 6 days from the Senate's response deadline. UC-AFT Local 2199 wrote this letter to the Academic Senate laying out concerns for their students and the lecturers. This thorough and well organized response relies on important protections provided in the Unit 18 MOU and on data compiled through UC-AFT’s Writing UC project, which gathered baseline salary and workload data and recommended best practices for all writing programs across UC. Kudos to Local 2199 for being prepared and taking quick action!

AB 52—Public Employee Orientations and Union Access
The UC-AFT Executive Board has endorsed Assembly Bill 52 (Cooper, D-Elk Grove). This bill would require public sector employers to provide all employees with an orientation and it would require the employer to permit labor unions to participate in these orientations. Early contact with new lecturers in UC sanctioned orientations would significantly improve our ability to connect with, educate and assist our members with a wide variety of problems commonly experienced by new lecturers. The bill will have a hearing in the Public Employee, Retirement and Social Security Committee (PERSS) next Wednesday, April 19th, at 9 AM. Please call your Assembly member and PERSS committee members today and urge them to support AB 52.
