UC resists law requiring disclosure of expenditures

From the S.F. Chronicle.

The University of California has so far failed to comply with a new state law pushed by Gov. Jerry Brown requiring it to disclose, for the first time, key details about how it spends its money — information state officials want especially now that UC is asking the regents to approve five years of tuition increases.

Please sign the University of California Student Association (UCSA) petition to stop President Napolitano's plan to increase tuition by 25% over the next five years.

UC-AFT in the Library—Agreement Reached on Requests for Points in Librarian Merit Reviews

On Friday October 24, a delegation of Unit 17 bargaining team members met with UCOP contract administrators to discuss the librarian contract and issues that have arisen since the MOU was ratified. The UC-AFT delegation reached an agreement with UCOP representatives that will allow librarians to request a specific number of points as part of their personal statement in the merit review process.  The role of the Review Initiator as well as the peer review body continues to be under discussion.

UC-AFT hit the ground running in the month of October. We held four two-day membership outreach events at UCI, UCB, UCSD and UCLA, where we talked with well over 200 bargaining unit members.  These one-on-one conversations resulted in about 120 new UC-AFT members.  Much of this outreach was done by lecturers and librarians who work on these campuses.  UC-AFT members talking to their colleagues is how we build a stronger union! Please get in touch with the UC-AFT officers on your campus to find out how you can help.

Our contract valorizes these rights and responsibilities, which include peer review, career status, academic freedom and opportunities for professional development. Librarians at UC are granted this academic status because running a university research library requires a commitment to academic values and intellectual integrity.
